Topical CBD oil (cannabinoids) can be helpful for treating many skin different conditions, according to a research review recently published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology.
This study was conducted by researchers at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus. They investigated the available research on the subject and concluded that cannabinoids (CBD) are effective against psoriasis, eczema, inflammatory skin disease and dermatitis.
Topical CBD products can be applied directly to the skin. Their active compounds penetrate and are absorbed into the skin to interact with surrounding cells, without entering the bloodstream.
Anti-Inflammatory Properties of CBD
According to the study’s lead author, Dr. Robert Dellavalle, MD, “These are topical cannabinoids, with little or no psychotropic effect, that can be used for skin disease. Cannabinoids contain anti-inflammatory properties that could make them useful in the treatment of a wide-range of skin diseases.”
It’s the anti-inflammatory properties of cannabinoids that make them beneficial for skin conditions, Dr. Dellavalle believes. CBD have been shown to interact with the Endocannabinoid System’s CB2 receptors to stimulate an anti-inflammatory response.
The Endocannabinoid System (ECS) is a master regulatory system that monitors and regulates (balances) all the major systems in the body, including the nervous system and the immune system. The ECS was discovered over 20 years ago when researchers wanted to know how the natural healing properties of the cannabis plant works in the body.
Inflammation is a vital immune response that help keep the body healthy. However, too much inflammation is unhealthy.
In fact, chronic inflammation is thought to be the leading cause of many health problems, including skin problems, arthritis, heart disease, chronic pain and many others.
Instead of taking anti-inflammatory drugs, which can cause a variety of side effects, many people today are looking for natural alternative and plant-based remedies, such as CBD oil and topical CBD cream.
Topical CBD Cream for Skin Itch
“Perhaps the most promising role for cannabinoids is in the treatment of itch,” said the study’s senior author Dr. Robert Dellavalle, MD, associate professor of dermatology at the University of Colorado School of Medicine.
One study included in the review found that eight of 21 patients with severe itching (pruritus) were able to completely eliminate and treat their skin condition by applying a cannabinoid (CBD) cream twice a day for three weeks.
Another study showed a topical CBD significantly inhibited the growth of a tumor. This is important, because 40 to 50 percent of Americans who live to age 65 will at one point in their life have some type of skin carcinoma.
“These diseases cause a lot of problems for people and have a direct impact on their quality of life,” said Dr. Dellavalle. “…and we need to educate dermatologists and patients about the potential uses of them.”
